چکیده

Following cultivation, substantial loss of soil organic matter occurs in surface layers. No-till is an agronomic practice to reverse or slow the matter. We reviewed 95 research papers that used 13C natural abundance soils quantify impact tillage on C dynamics cropping systems. New (from current systems) accumulated under no-till, whereas most extreme cultivation (mouldboard ploughing) mixed new throughout soil. There was a decline with years cultivation. Compared land had been tilled, no-till generally little accumulation C. Tillage and residue retention caused stratification stocks depended depth, highest concentrations found no-till. Shifts δ13C signature indicated significant exchange ‘new’ for original (old) methods no size microbial biomass pool. Change indicates rapidly incorporates carbon. The largest change values (Δ13C) observed coarse sand fraction, smallest occurred clay fraction. Comparison conventional vs showed inconsistent results effect different particle fractions. Natural data show systems do not result increases top 0.30 m
